Depression Counselling | Bentleigh
1 in 16 Australians will experience depression every year. Depression is not a “weakness” and you can't simply "snap out" of it and not a sign of personal weakness or failure.
If you find yourself having intense, sad or depressed feelings for longer than two weeks, and they start to affect the way you’re living life, you may at risk of clinical depression. We know there is a range of contributing factors that lead to clinical depression such as our genes, our personality style and negative life events.
There are different types of depressive disorders. Symptoms can range from relatively minor through to very severe.
-
Characterised by low mood and/or loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities, as well as other symptoms.
-
Characterised by periods of loss of reality and experience psychosis, for example hallucinations, delusions and paranoia.
-
Involving periods of feeling depressed and periods of feeling high, or manic.
-
Experienced either during pregnancy and in the months after following childbirth.
-
Chronic low mood but symptoms are less severe.
-
Chronic mood swings described a milder type of bipolar disorder
Unfortunately, many people often suffer in silence and do not seek support.
If depression is left untreated, the severity of symptoms can increase, leading to major chronic depression, which can be more difficult to treat. Seeking depression counselling as soon as you recognise the symptoms will make the recovery process faster and easier.
